Shopping for an air
cleaner? Not sure which type is best for you? Well read on, because you
have found the right site to help you learn more about air cleaners.
Ultraviolet Light and Ozone technologies are not new technologies and
have been in use for the past several decades in hospitals, medical
facilities and the food industry. The air purification action of these
technologies depends on the germ killing properties of the ultra violet
light and the highly reactive properties of the ozone gas that is
produced as a result of the high energy action on the oxygen atom in the
atmospheric oxygen. Ozone can react quickly with chemical contaminants
and attacks the biological agents such as bacteria, moulds, fungus and
virus in the air to kill them and purify the air in a living space.
However, it is desirable that the levels of ozone in the air be
maintained within safe limits of 0.04 ppm as specified in United States
Federal standards, otherwise the ozone in the atmosphere can be harmful
to humans and animals living in the space. AHPCO™, which is an Advanced
Hydrated photo catalytic Oxidation technology, consists of broad
spectrum ultraviolet light targeted on a quad metallic catalyst in a
low-level ozone and moist atmosphere and has been in use in the
applications related to air, water, food and laundry. The AHPCO cell was
developed for use in HVAC systems in 2003 and this method of application
makes it possible to provide the fastest oxidizer distribution. The
catalytic action of Rhodium and other hydration compounds have
considerably improved the cell performance. The construction of the new
cell is such that it provides minimal exposure to the catalyst and the
newly developed HE/UV Broad Spectrum 100-3-NM bulb with a heavy duty
filament has been developed. The new cell is very reliable and needs to
be replaced once every three years. The new AHPCO Cell has a three year,
25000 hour life which means that once it has been installed, it can
operate maintenance free for years. The improved design with catalyst
generates more hydro peroxides, super oxide ions and ozone levels were
.01-.015 ppm which is similar to the country or forest air ozone levels
of 0.01 – 0.02 ppm. The ozone that is generated by the cell provides
protection against airborne mold, bacteria, viruses, odours and chemical
contaminants in the air. This is a low cost, maintenance free device
which only needs to be replaced every three years and the level of ozone
that it produces is not sufficiently high for the device to be
classified as an ozone producing device. This device was not designed
for HVAC systems but it can still be used effectively to provide air
purification in a variety of settings (David, 2002).
