Corona Discharge Ozone Systems use high voltages to breakdown the oxygen in the atmosphere into ozone and the action is similar to the action of lighting discharges in nature. Because the action of the system depends on the generation of ozone using high electrical voltages, this is a cheap system with the highly reactive ozone being effective against odors, bacteria, mold and some chemical contaminants.

However, the high voltage that generates ozone also produces Nitric Acid and Nitric Oxide as a result of the breakdown of the abundant nitrogen in the air. These substances can irritate the lungs and may be harmful if their safe threshold is exceeded, producing a pungent smell and corrosion problems in the space whose atmosphere is required to be purified.

Because the concentration of ozone as a result of this device cannot be guaranteed, therefore it is not used to purify air in occupied spaces. There is a higher maintenance requirement associated with the technology and maintenance can be more complicated (Inspired Living, 2005).
