Polluted air can cause allergies in those who are breathing in the contaminated atmosphere.

Asthma as an allergic reaction can occur as a result of contaminated air containing dust particles or dust mites. Dust mites are the single most common allergy causing organism which individuals breathe frequently at home or in the high rise building. Dust mites are a microscopic organism and as many as 42,000 dust mites can be found in an ounce of dust. Up to 40 pounds of dust is generated per year, per 1,500 square feet of space. The dust can host up to 15 species of dust mites. The dust mite is a microscopic insect like creature that lives off the shed scales of human skin and lives in pillows, mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Warm and humid climate results in the rapid reproduction of the dust mite whose fecal matter is the allergy causing ingredient in contaminated air to which individuals react. A single female dust mite can lay as many as 25 – 50 eggs and has a reproductive cycle that lasts for three weeks (Air Purification Tips, 2004).
