Introduction to air cleaners

Pure air and a pollution free ambient atmosphere is not just a necessity for healthy living, but this is also a necessity for the manufacturing of silicon wafers for electronic integrated circuits and certain pharmaceutical products. The process for the manufacturing of semiconductor wafers, for example, is so heavily dependant on dust free ambient atmosphere that it cannot be carried out in a dust contaminated atmosphere. The yield of semiconductor integrated circuits in a contaminated ambient atmosphere drops significantly so as to make the manufacturing process uneconomical. For the manufacturing of the complex larger die chips, the effects of defects can be catastrophic. A defect rate of 1.6 defects / square centimeter will end up with a 40% yield for 4 MB DRAMS, 10% yield for 16 MB DRAMS and 0% yield for 40 MB DRAMS. Higher complexity chips must have wafers with very low defects. Defects in semiconductor wafers are very dependant on dust and contamination introduced during the manufacturing process. Hence, air filtration and clean rooms are essential in any fabrication facility for semiconductor wafers. Similarly, some pharmaceutical products need to be manufactured in biologically as well as dust and chemical contamination free atmosphere. A pure atmosphere is also essential for a healthy working environment in the high-rise buildings of today which can house thousands of workers whose health may be at risk if the air purification system was to fail or become contaminated by bacteria (Berriman Associates, 2005).
