The relatively high levels of ozone produced by this device can be of concern to some individuals and another disadvantage of this device is that it there can be leakage of mercury into the atmosphere as a result of a broken bulb. Mercury is a harmful and toxic substance and any mercury leakage into the environment is undesirable. Hence the system requires inspections and monitoring in order to ensure that it is functioning correctly. This technology has not been designed for the HVAC systems and is on the border of United States ozone safety limits (David, 2002).
