Similar to the ultra violet lamps is the ozone producing ultra violet lamp that relies on the fact that ultraviolet light of a specific wavelength is capable of producing ozone by reacting and exciting the oxygen atoms in the atmosphere. Ultraviolet lamps in the 185nm wavelength range produce low-level ozone, just as the sun does in nature and this ozone is very effective in odor microbial reduction as well as the control of chemical contaminants.

This technology like the ultraviolet lamp technology is low cost, low maintenance and easy to install. It provides the ozone which can travel with the air stream to purify and treat the air throughout a work space by reacting with biological agents and chemical contaminants. However, as with all ozone systems, it is necessary to ensure that the level of ozone that is produced is within the safe limits specified in the United States Federal standards.

The accidental release of mercury into the environment and the fact that solely depending on ozone for neutralizing harmful chemicals in the atmosphere may not be effective, are the disadvantages of this system (Air Purification Tips, 2004).
