The PHI Cell was a technology that has been designed specifically for applications involving the HVAC system of a building. The PHI Cell is considered to be an advanced oxidation technology that consists of a proprietary, high-intensity broad spectrum UV tube (100 – 300nm) in a hydrated catalytic matrix cell. The cell produces low-level ozone and a majority of this ozone is converted into airborne hydro peroxides and super oxide ions. The entire assembly is constructed in such a manner to be encased in a protective metal cell and the UV bulb is protected against breakages so that there is no danger of any mercury leakage from the bulb. This system is low cost and maintenance free, requiring replacement every three years. This technology which removes biological agents has been used to remove the SARS virus from subways in China in an effort to improve the public health in public places to reduce the risk of epidemics. 24 hour protection is provided against germs, odours and chemical pollutants. United States Federal agencies have determined that the safe limits for ozone are less then 0.04 ppm and hence this device is not considered to be an ozone device. The system has no significant disadvantages as compared to other air purification technologies. This technology is the most effective technology for use in the HVAC system, with a single unit serving one HVAC air handling system (Inspired Living, 2005).
